Maritime painting

The Tide is Coming by Nadine Platt

Maritime subject matter has always been inspiriational for me. Places that I visited have always left a deep  impression on me and are reflected in my paintings.

In my maritime painting I use different media depending on the mood of the picture and the idea I am trying to communicate.

Some years ago I spent time on the Cote d’Azure in France. No need to describe this beautiful and inspirational place, which is and has always been for creative people.

Please see below some examples of my paintings inspired by this unforgettable place.

Côte d’Azur

French Riviera by Nadine Platt

This painting is titled  “Côte d’Azur – Sunset on the Promenade des Anglais”.
The Sun was going down casting long shadows off the palm trees of the French Riviera. A lonely woman was walking along the beach. It was windy. The wind ruffled the water, creating smithereens of playful splashes. Only fast moving clouds and plam branches suggested wind, the trunks of the trees stayed solid and unmoved. I was mesmerized by this juxtaposition of  moving clouds and “unmoved”, still trees. Everything is beautiful in Nice, every nook and crany. Even the sunlight seems to be different from other places on Earth. To catch it on the canvas was another challenge.

Maldon

When I visited Maldon I happened to have my easle with me and could not resist the desire to make some watercolour sketches on the spot.  The old “Brent” is a 1920s old barge, which is now “proudly retired”  adorns the place with its presence.

There were many parts of Maldon which could be turned into beautiful paintings but I only had one day. My next choice was a view to the Queen’s Head old pub with majestic old dutch barges moored in front.  Please see below my watercolour of this place.

Maldon on Themse by Nadine Platt

The sunset was quiet that day and serene. My next painting is dedicated to that fragile moment in time when the day is not entirely over yet and the night has not taken its rightful place under the sky.

An Old Yacht by Nadine Platt

Yachts

Yachts always fascinated me with their stylish design with beatifully contoured shapes standing out on the blue background of the sky or being seamlessly blended with the raging sky.  I sailed on yachts in the nice weather and on very rainy days. I had a good feel of this type of vessel while steering it or helping with the sheets.  In this particular painting I gathered all my knowledge and sensation of being on a yacht. I used pastel to depict subtleties and drama of that special sunset.
